Seaweek – Waiari Beach Trip

Last week Te Manga and Te Puawai had a fantastic day out at Waiari as part of our Seaweek activities. It was a little rough but the students made the most of the beautiful surroundings and fun beach activities including kayaking, snorkelling, visiting the rock pools and swimming!

Thank you to Sir and Mrs Windleborn and our lovely whanau for supporting us on the day.

I went very deep and there was lots of seaweed and there were massive waves and there was water flooding .My chake and then I kept my life jacket on and I jumped into the water. Then out of nowhere a massive wave swallowed seaweed grabbed my leg  and I saw a chuued wave I felt like I was knocked out.

Tuturu Tangata with Whaea Nat

We have Tuturu Tangata with Whaea Nat every Thursday. Whaea Nat is teaching us about healthy eating, food groups and being fit! Today we made smoothies and bliss balls.

Some of the students weren’t sure about the spinach in the smoothies but overall they thought they were delicious. The bliss balls were a healthy treat, made with dried fruit, oats, peanut butter and rolled in coconut. It was great to use our outdoor classroom and we appreciate being able to cook with the help of Whaea Nat and Whaea Reyna.

St Johns with Whaea Jo

We had two fantastic first aid sessions with Whaea Jo this week. The students learnt how to  bandage a wound, how to respond in an emergency if someone is unconscious and how to ring 111. They learnt the importance of knowing your address and phone number in an emergency. The students enjoyed working with each other and learnt so much from Whaea Jo.

Science – Water and Milk

Today we started our Friday Science sessions with two experiments; one with water and one with milk.

We filled up a cup of water and covered it with a piece of plastic. Then turned it upside down and GUESS what, the water did not come out. The students discussed the idea of gravity to help them to understand what was happening. If air could not get in, the water did not come out. As soon as they shook their cups, air got in and gravity does it’s thing!

Our second experiment was called ‘Magic Milk’. We used milk, food colouring and a stick with diswashing liquid on it. We waved our ‘magic wands’ and put the stick in the milk to watch an amazing chemical reaction. There were lots of oooooooooo’s and ahhhhhhhhhh’s while the dishing liquid made the milk swirl and move in all directions.

The students discussed what was happening. The students decided there was something in the milk that made it react with the dishwashing soap. They brainstormed words like protein, calcium and fat. I was so impressed. They were right, when the dishwashing liquid touched the milk, it reacted with the fats.

The soap molecules from the dishwashing liquid are trying to attach to the fat molecules in the milk which causes movement in the liquid as the molecules in the fat and soap bond together and expel the water and food colouring.
